KLM have an excellent on-line check in system. Anyone can check in as long as you have your eticket number and/ or your KLM booking reference. If you obtained your ticket from a travel agent, make sure that the booking reference is the KLM one and not that of the reservation system on which the booking was made. Note that for departures from USA aiports, you will use the North West Airlines system.

• all flights operated by KLM

• all KLM flights operated by Air France, Northwest Airlines and Kenya Airways

• all KLM flights operated by Malev Hungarian Airlines, Ukraine International Airlines and Aer Lingus departing from Amsterdam Schiphol

Irregular check-in times
For the following flights Internet check-in is available from 24 to 1 hour prior to departure:

• Flights from Amsterdam to the US.

• Flights from London Gatwick, Paris (CDG), Frankfurt, Düsseldorf or Brussels to the US being operated by Northwest Airlines.

• Flights to Amsterdam from Abu Dhabi (KL0455), Cairo (KL0554), Cape Town (KL0598), Delhi (KL0872), Dammam/Dahran (KL0440), Dubai (KL0428), Hyderabad (KL0874), Kano (KL0577), Kuwait (KL0458) and Teheran (KL0434).

Apart from the above, you can check in online for both your outward and return journeys (normally from 30mins to 1 hour prior to departure).

If traveling alone or in a group of up to nine people, you can take advantage of the convenience of Internet check-in. You can check in online when traveling with hand baggage or hold baggage. All you need is an e-ticket.

SEATS: During the booking process it is possible to pre-select a window or aisle seat. You will find this option in Step 3 "Your Details". It is not possible to select a seat when you book an action fare (ie dirt cheap one). When you have an e-ticket and use Internet check-in you will be able to select your seat as of 30 hours before departure.

A new option is available on a growing number of KLM intercontinental flights: on a first come, first served basis, passengers can reserve Economy Class seats with guaranteed extra legroom by paying a surcharge of EUR 50.00 per seat per flight.

Note: these seats can be reserved only by using Internet Check-in between 30 hours and 1 hour before your flight's departure time and as long as they are available (limited availability). Payment must be made by credit card.

Above all, never, ever, ever check in anywhere, anyhow other than for the flight you are about to take. No matter what - UNLESS you are 150% certain that nothing will possibly ever change. You would not believe how complicated life can become if you check in for the return flight (thinking you are saving time) and then find you need to change it. Trust me.
